MY TRAINING
Laura Olovyannikova
My Pilates training took place in London with the world famous Alan Herdman at his renowned studio.
After completing a year long teacher training course in both mathwork and equipment I am fully qualified and have been teaching Pilates for over ten years.
Trained in classical ballet from the age of five I went on to graduate from English National Ballet School in London.
During this time I began practising Pilates and got to experience first hand how this could help to improve my strength and flexibility but also to recover from injuries.
After completing my dance training I studied at Birmingham University, graduating with a First Class Honours degree, but I always felt that my passion lay in helping others to feel their best.
I have a wide experience helping to rehabilitate clients with injuries including many suffering from chronic back pain.
Many of the people I teach have been with me from the start and continue to be faithful clients.
WHO WAS JOSEPH PILATES?
Joseph Pilates was born in Germany in 1883. As a child he was frail and suffered from asthma, rickets and rheumatic fever. However he was determined to overcome these difficulties which led him to training in gymnastics, diving and skiing.
During the First World War, he was interned with other German nationals which is when he began to developed his technique of physical fitness by teaching his fellow internees. During the latter part of the War, he served as an orderly in a hospital on the Isle of Man where he worked with patients unable to walk. He attached bed springs to the hospital beds to help support the patients' limbs, leading to the development of his famous piece of equipment known as the 'Cadillac'. Much of his equipment, although slightly adapted, is still in use today in many Pilates Studios.
He emigrated to the USA in the early 1920s with his wife Clara, and together they opened the first 'Pilates Studio' in New York in 1926. Clara was instrumental in helping to evolve and adapt the Pilates method to suit the individual needs of clients.
